How I first learned about Sri Lankan-style Acupuncture  by Gordon Josephs, MD(H)

In 1988 I spent about 6-8 weeks of 8 hour daily tutoring in advanced acupuncture and homeopathic principles
at the home of Drs. Ken and Kumari Wright, both HMDs (Homeopathic Medical doctors) and OMDs (Oriental
Medical Doctors) with degrees from Sri Lanka, inclusive of advanced Acupuncture. They then escorted me to
Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) off the tip of India, and more specifically to Columbo South General Hospital.

It was early morning and I was in culture shock. The hospital, two stories high, had no doors and no windows.
People in sarongs, both men and women, were everywhere. I was lead to the rear of the hospital. There, half
indoors and half outdoors, was perhaps the most famous acupuncture clinic in the world. Hundreds of people
were sitting on benches under the shade of huge Temple Flower (Aralia) trees. Many more were moving on
paths leading in and out of the clinic, so packed that you could only shuffle slowly along. The ground outside
was littered with acupuncture needles, and old men were collecting them for sterilization an reuse! (Curiously,
cross contamination and infection is extremely rare.)

About 40 doctors and other students from all over the world were there too, to spend a month learning. Like me,
they had paid to be there. Here the doctors are the students, and the patients receive free care. As an hour went
by the clinic got busier and finally there seemed to be a special frenzy.

It was the arrival of Professor Dr. Sir Anton Jayasuria, author of 17 books translated into many languages,
Board Certified Surgeon, Minister of Health for all of Sri Lanka, and the Head Professor at the free government
Acupuncture Clinic. Anton Jayasuria was a large, moderately overweight, dark brown skinned man with eyes
that scanned the crowd and seem completely at ease amidst the pandemonium. In his puffy left hand, made
into a fist, he held what looked to be about 200 acupuncture needles, each some three inches long. He began
to speak and everything became silent. Everybody listened.

Dr. Jayasuria began presenting live case after case. "Here’s a patient with migraine headache." He plunks
acupuncture needles into the patient like their skin was butter, calling off the point’s name and location. He
then passes the patient over to a student-doctor who he thinks is ready for the case. The student then does
the treatment 3-6 times per week, for as long as it is needed.

Somehow word got out that I had been a doctor for 18 years and seemed to know my stuff. On the second day
the Professor starts feeding me patients. Soon I have 15 patients and I’m throwing in acupuncture needles with
the same ease as giving a shot of penicillin. Where could I have gotten this many acupuncture patients to practice
on in the States? Nowhere!

If you would like to see the hospital and the acupuncture clinic, go into my video room at the office. On the wall
are pictures of me at the clinic.

Acupuncture in Sri Lanka is serious medicine.

Here in the USA people think of acupuncture as good for pain relief or weight reduction, or for drug withdrawal
programs. But almost anything can respond to well applied acupuncture.  I saw cancers treated, vitiligo and other
skin ailments healed, paralytic limbs of stroke patients reversed, psychological-emotional problems alleviated.

I met a old man and watched a videotape of him having an 18-pound tumor the size of a watermelon removed
from his belly while he was rendered pain-free with acupuncture and was completely awake and drinking coconut
water during the surgery!

I personally treated a child for stuttering while in Sri Lanka. In three weeks he was 80-90% better,
and very appreciative.

I saw a man with malaria cured over a few weeks with single needle acupuncture! They simply placed the needle
in the one main immune stimulating acupuncture point every day. No other treatment. His fever went away and
his blood tests reverted to normal.

Anyone who trained at this school in Sri Lanka for two years, knows how to balance the body with acupuncture,
electrical stimulation of acupuncture points, moxibustion (application of heat to acupuncture points), and other
exotic techniques. A balanced body heals itself.

YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THIS: WE DO NOT DO ORDINARY ACUPUNCTURE

We will not do "quickie" acupuncture. We will not just do a little pain relief. You can get that kind of acupuncture
all over town. We will instead get to the cause of problems and attempt to eliminate it by correcting imbalances.
This may take time. Do not expect serious problems to vanish in one or two treatments (actually, they do sometimes).

You should know, I am a homeopathic physician. It is clear to me that the combination of acupuncture and an
occasional homeopathic oral remedy can speed the healing process greatly. So expect that, too, as part of the total
treatment, when you come to CCUSA for acupuncture.
